Our 11th Green Flag

Green Schools Success in St Joseph’s 2022

We have had a very exciting year in terms of outdoor projects in St Joseph’s Primary school. We have spent the last two years working towards our 11th Green Flag which is based on the Theme of Global Citizenship Food and Biodiversity.  To achieve success in this, we have developed the following areas within our school.

  • We have planted a wildflower patch within our school grounds to attract more pollinators to our local environment.
  • We have made a sensory garden for use by the whole school, the benefits of sensory gardens are widely known and we are already seeing this within our school community.
  • We have a vegetable patch where every class has chosen to grow a variety of vegetables which they will then harvest, taste and cook with.
  • Children are helping to maintain the sensory gardens and vegetable patch by daily watering etc. thus teaching responsibility and caring for the environment.
  • We took part in the national spring clean in May where each class was given an area to pick up litter, both within the school ground and the surrounding community grounds.
  • We have signage for all the native trees, birds and flowers on our school grounds so all those entering the school can familiarise themselves with tree species native to Ireland.

Thanks to all those who helped on our journey towards our 11th green flag, especially the two teachers in charge of the Green Schools Committee, Grace Dunne and Annie Hayes.

Our 11th Green Flag was raised by Michael Lowry on 21st of June. Check out the photos below.
