Active School Flag

Active School Flag

The Active School Flag is awarded to schools that strive to achieve a physically educated and physically active school community. As a school, we are aiming to receive our first Active Flag award. Our journey officially began during the 2022/23 school year.

Our school motto, chosen by our Active School Committee is:

‘Being Active Every Day Helps Us Live A Better Way!’

Physical Education

Physical Education is a child-centred curriculum in St. Joseph’s. The strands of the Primary School Curriculum include: Athletics, Games, Outdoor and Adventure Activities, Dance, Aquatics and Gymnastics.

As a school we ensure:

  • The importance of enjoying physical activity.
  • The importance of play, in its many forms, in the learning and developmental process.
  • Maximum participation by all children in the physical education lesson.
  • The development of skills and the increasing understanding of activities.
  • Providing a balance between contact and non-contact activities.
  • Providing a balance between competitive and non-competitive activities.
  • Providing opportunities for achievement for each child.
  • Providing activities suitable for pupils of all ages and abilities.

Physical Activity

Our school is involved in a wide range of physical activities. These include camogie, ladies Gaelic football, soccer, hockey, tennis, aquatics, golf, indoor games, and after-school activities. We award Active Students of the Month in each classroom at our monthly assemblies.

We take part in the European Week of Sport on an annual basis. All pupils put in a huge effort each day running laps of the playground and school field, skipping, participating in Active Stations and much more.

Our Active School Committee organises music on the yard at lunch time as well as Active Stations for our younger pupils.

Partnerships

We have a wonderful ASF Committee that meets regularly and keeps everyone updated at our monthly whole-school assemblies.

We avail of the fabulous sporting facilities available to us here in Tipperary Town – we are regular visitors to the local Tennis club, Education Centre & Swimming Pool, GAA Club, Soccer Club and Pitch & Putt Club, to mention a few.

We also welcome outside agencies to St. Joseph’s to deliver bespoke active programmes to our classes. We have enjoyed lessons in FMS (Fundamental Movement Skills), Gymnastics, Dance and hockey in recent times.

Active School Week

We held our first Active School Week last year in May. A timetable of events was drafted by our ASF Committee and pupils enjoyed daily activities outside in the glorious sunshine. It was an enjoyable week, and was enjoyed by all pupils and staff. We are already looking forward to our 2024 Active Week!

In addition to our Active Week we also organise Sports Days for the Junior and Senior sections of the school and our yearly Skipathon is a big favourite with everyone in our school community.
