Albert Nolan – bees and pollination

Albert Nolan visited in June to teach the pupils about recognising bees, and their importance in pollination. We examined our school garden and planted lavender and some bright flowers. Lavender smells lovely and bees like brightly-coloured flowers. We also looked at dandelions, buttercups and clover in our football field.

We walked around the school looking for bees. However all we found was a big wasp. It was quite angry when Albert caught it in a net, and then carefully transferred it to a viewing jar. After we looked at it, Albert released it again.

Albert asked us to leave some grass uncut for bees and other insects. There are lots of types of bees in Ireland. Albert’s visit was very enjoyable.

Student Council

St. Joseph’s School  Student Council

The voice of the pupils, that’s what the Student Council can be described as.  Pupils from 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes are the representatives of all the classes. Principal Ms. Tobin and the Student Council meet regularly to talk about goings-on in the school and future developments they might engage in.  We also organise fund raisers for the school and charities e.g. cake sale for the Laura Lynn foundation.  We take suggestions from the whole school and try to make them happen.

by Alexia Coca & Ella O’Keeffe, 6th Class.
